Peters Places in Local Essay Contest

VFW Award Presented to Mikkelle Peters

For over 20 years, Shirley Curl, a member of the J. Barry Jones Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, has been supporting veterans in this area through various ways, including heading the Annual Voice of Democracy contest featuring area High School Students. Vidalia High School junior Mikkelle Peters, who competed in the essay event for the 3rd year, was awarded 3rd place last Thursday and said that she is very proud to share her feelings about being an American, “I really love my country. I’m a naturalized citizen of the United States so writing these essays is just one way I can express my love for this country, and putting it into words and sharing it with other people is just one way to really express that love.”

Vidalia High School History and Government teacher Bobby George who has been involved in this contest for most of the years that it has been in existence, says that it is an important contest because it gives the student’s “time to think about and reflect on what it means to be an American and who they need to be grateful to for the opportunity to live in our country.”
